Our unique team-based approach provides in-depth training in the science and process of improvement through interactive workshops, webinars, on-site coaching and detailed qualitative feedback on project reports.

Three 3-day workshops are held over the course of the year, in which teams will learn from experts in the field of improvement, covering a range of topics designed to take you from project initiation, to implementation and finally scale-up and spread. You’ll be assigned a specialist coach with the skills and experience to support you in delivering your project and have the opportunity to learn from others’ experiences in delivering improvements across the health and social care economy.

Previous teams have worked on projects on a variety of challenging topics, including identifying pre-morbid cognitive issues in acute stroke patients, improving the oral health of inpatients on the ward, and implementing a delirium screening bundle.

IS4L team at WWL promoting a safer patient flow by reducing capacity breaches of the ED 4hr standard by 50% in the next 6 months.

As part of the NHS Quest membership, five teams from member organisations are sponsored to join the HSJ award-nominated training programme, usually priced at £15,000 per team.

This film was produced for Dr Fozia Ahmed, an IS4 alumi, who was inspired to undertake this work after graduating from the programme.

The film showcases the innovative work of Central Manchester Foundation Trust’s heart care team, who provide home care and day case centre care for patients with heart problems. The aim of the IS4 project, HeartFailure@Home, was to reduce the length of hospital stay for patients by caring for them in a more controlled setting.

This hugely successful improvement work was nominated for a BMJ (British Medical Journal) award in early 2016. The BMJ is an international peer reviewed medical journal and a fully online first publication who put their emphasis on ‘patient first’ every time. Fozia Ahmed showed this film as part of her presentation at the awards in London.

Recently, Haelo Project Manager, Jess, sat down with one of our IS4 Alumni, Emily Birleson to discuss the IS4 process and how this has worked for them.
